Are we wired to do meditation?

In Ananda Nagar

Recently I have been exploring the world of cognitive neuro-science in order to find a scientific explaination to certain specific faculties of the mind. The development of this field of science is very relevant for the scientific explaination of how meditation works and what are its effects. Studies have been done related for example to mindfullness meditation and published on Google Tech Talks available on YouTube.

Each type of meditation has its peculiarity and characteristics -- making it very difficult to generalize. Yet it seems meditation is gradually becoming an inborn instinct for human beings. How this is possible and what are the consequences of such a tendency in society can be easily guessed. More new born babies will be naturally inclined to meditation to the point that it will difficult for them to be ônormalö without having enough time to spend in a meditative state of one sort or another.

At a stage in society where famous people like Tiger Woods or Al Gore are meditators it is conceivable to foresee a growing popularity of meditation and meditation techniques in all strata of society. As we have a list of famous vegetarians, like Einstein, the list of famous meditators might become the new hit parade where most known personalities will race to be recognized.

Til now I couldn't find websites selling meditation techniques or mantras like you can sell a CD. Maybe I didnÆt look well enough but the trend is certain and in this regard Ananda Marga's stance to offer spiritual practices like meditation free of charge will become more and more relevant.

Meditation is gradually becoming a specific field of education and medicine while in the past it was relegated to esoteric or occult practices. This shift will determine a progressive recognition for those who teach meditation in a similar way that happened for the discipline of yoga. We will have an MM or master in meditation in some universities across the globe as we have now an MBA as Master in Business Administration.

Yet meditation is not the end of human psychic development. Human beings are starting to explore new cognitive fields that can be classified in the realm of transmutation of psychic environments. The general concept behind it is when an idea reaches a critical mass of acceptance it becomes all-pervading. As meditation is reaching such a state of acceptance, other more advanced faculties of the mind may become the forerunner in human cognitive development.

One faculty that is ineffably escaping from a scientific explanation is what is called ôcommon senseö. Common sense is indeed not so common and difficult to prove or even define. P.R. Sarkar may have hinted in that direction when he named the faculty of rationality and rationalization as the key to remove those divisions in human society that are causing so many sanguinary battles and so much warfare.

Research in the process of transmutation may live in the secretive chambers of the alchemists and reach the scientific laboratories of university and research centers. The secret of life may not be found by building humongous and costly accelerators for sub-atomic particles. It is more likely to be found in the laboratory of the human mind. Once again cognitive neuroscience seems to be a more suitable field of investigation.

In the field of sound and music also lies the secret of happiness and spiritual realization. In all the different emanations of the universe that appear not to be of material nature we may found the origin of the creation. Certain types of meditation may help human beings in finding the link between finite and infinite. In the definition of P.R. Sarkar, education corresponds to the subjectivization of external objectivity and in this perspective education never ends. There are so many things to explore even in this relative world. So many secrets that are waiting to be unveiled. Human life is still a big wonderful mystery.
