The latest cyclone front to hit Haiti has brought heavy flashfloods and mudslides submerging large urban areas with a potentially devastating long-term impact. The full scale of the disaster is hard to estimate because of the isolation of the worst hit area, however according to official radio forecasts this is one of the biggest natural calamities to hit the country in decades. During Hurricane Jean in 2004 only in Gonaives 2,500 drowned in the first day of the disaster, and this time the water level has covered the entire city of half-a-million under 9 feet of water. Our team there has been giving us updated accounts of horrific human and animal suffering, death, and destruction. With more storms following in the next few days, AMURT/EL is now preparing to launch a rapid response operation which will most likely last for weeks if not months. This e-mail is an urgent appeal for donations and other support for this operation. Please read below for more information, and make a small commitment to help us save lives. NOW! Donations can be sent to the AMURT office in Maryland- 6810 Tilden Lane, Rockville, Md 20852, or given online at www.amurt.net.
